Martina Pigoni earned both her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Medical Biotechnology from the University of Udine, Italy. During her academic journey, she engaged in international research experiences, joining the Minichello Lab at the University of Edinburgh and the Gilthorpe Lab at the University of Umeå. In 2014, Martina relocated to Munich, Germany, to pursue her PhD at the Graduate School of Systemic Neurosciences (GSN-LMU) while working at the German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases (DZNE). Under the guidance of the Lichtenthaler Lab, her PhD research focused on the molecular mechanisms of Alzheimer’s disease and the side effects associated with BACE1 inhibitors.
In 2019, Martina joined the Arlotta Lab at Harvard University, USA, where she utilized human brain organoids to investigate molecular aspects of Autism Spectrum Disorder. Following this, she worked as a Discovery Scientist at the Institute for Human Biology in collaboration with the Neuroscience and Rare Disease department at Roche. In this role, Martina focused on developing blood-brain barrier models to advance research in brain delivery and neurodegenerative diseases.
In 2023, Martina transitioned to the role of Senior Discovery Scientist in the Neuroscience and Rare Disease department and is now evolving into the role of Research Project Leader. In this capacity, she supports multiple projects in the fields of neurodegeneration and brain delivery, driving innovative solutions to advance therapeutic discovery.
