January 23rd 2025, 1-2 pm
Philipp Schommers Dr. Schommers studied medicine from 2007 to 2013 in Cologne and Sydney and began specialist training at the University Hospital Cologne in 2013. He became a certified internist in 2021 and an infectiologist in 2023, currently serving as a senior physician leading the infectious diseases ward. Pursuing a career as a “Clinician Scientist” in immunology and infectiology, he paused his clinical work after his first doctorate (Dr. med.) to research at the Leibniz Institute for Virology in Hamburg. Returning to Cologne in 2016, he completed a second doctorate (Dr. nat. med.) in 2020 and habilitated in 2022. His lab focuses on antiviral immunity, studying antibody responses and viral escape mutations in diseases like HIV and SARS-CoV-2. Supported by major grants, including the Emmy Noether Program and the Else Kröner Clinician Scientist Professorship, Dr. Schommers assumed this role in 2024.
Angelique Hölzemer Dr. Hölzemer is a clinician scientist at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf. Dr. Hölzemer's work has been supported by extensive research funding. She secured grants for projects such as neuroimmune crosstalk in HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders (2018–2020) and liver tolerance research (2020). In 2022, she was awarded funding by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) for leading a Nachwuchsgruppe (junior research group), underscoring her leadership in virology and immunology. Her research focuses on virus immunology, particularly NK cell-mediated mechanisms in infectious diseases. Dr. Hölzemer’s contributions, recognized with prestigious awards like the Hector Research Prize, continue to advance the field of infectious disease research.
