DZG Lunchtime Career Talks
For doctoral candidates and postdocs: Discover your future career - role models share their advice.
Topic: Academic Research, Writing, and Reaching People
With: Prof. Dr. Alexander Bartelt, Technische Universität München (TUM)
Alexander Bartelt investigates the molecular biology of metabolism and how it leads to obesity, fatty liver, diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. Work from the Bartelt Lab has provided insights into the inner workings of metabolism, fat cells and their interaction with the immune system. Through the work on nutrition, energy metabolism and thermogenesis, the Bartelt Lab investigates how weight gain and weight loss are regulated at the cellular level. His work places the metabolic adaptation to molecular stress factors at the center of the pathogenesis of complex cardiometabolic diseases.
After studying biochemistry and molecular biology at University of Hamburg, Dr. Bartelt began his scientific career at University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf, where he received his PhD with distinction in 2010 on molecular mechanisms of lipid metabolism. He continued his research on brown adipose tissue at Harvard University, Boston, USA, in 2013 and then returned to Germany as Professor of Cardiovascular Metabolism at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München in 2019. Since 2024, Dr. Bartelt is the inaugural Else Kröner Fresenius Professor & Chair of Translational Nutritional Medicine as at TUM Weihenstephan Campus. He is also a principal investigator at Helmholtz Diabetes Center Munich and a member of the German Center for Diabetes Research (DZD) and the German Center for Cardiovascular Diseases (DZHK). Dr. Bartelt has received several national and international honors, awards, and distinctions for his research.
